Massasoit was the leader of the Wampanoag tribe during around 1620 when the Pilgrims arrived. He was described as “very courageous” and “very subtle for a savage.” He was one of the chief allies to the Plymouth colony, and lived until 1661.

Squanto’s story begins with him being kidnapped by an English explorer in 1614 and sold into slavery. When he returned in the 1620s, he became an interpreter and guide for the pilgrims at Plymouth.
